THINGS JESUS PREACHED AGAINST

TEXT: Matthew 10:34

INTRODUCTION:

1. Read Matthew 10:34.
2. Regarding the text:
    (1) Jesus is sot forth as the Great Divider.
    (2) Came not to send peace, but to divide.
    (3) This division would come about as a result of the application of his teaching.
3. The teachings of Jesus contain both positive and negativetruths.
4. To be on the Lord's side we must be for what he was for, and we must be against what he was against.
5. What are some of the things Jesus was against?

DISCUSSION: Jesus preached against:

I. FALSE DOCTRINE.

1. Jesus condemned the Pharisees for binding their traditions on the people. (Matt. 15:6-9)
2. We must take heed to be sound in doctrine. (Heb. 2:1-3;  2 Jno. 9-11; Gal. 1:6-9; 2 Tim. 1:13)
3. We must oppose those who teach false doctrine. (Cf. 1 Tim. 1:3; 6:3-5)

II. RELIGIOUS INSINCERITY.

1. Jesus rebuked the Pharisees for doing their worship only to be seen of men. (Matt. 23:5; 5:20)
2. Many time church members express no sincerity in their worship.  They simply "go through the motions" of singing, taking the Lord' Supper, etc., to be seen of others.
3. To be pleasing to God we must worship both in spirit and in truth. (John 4:24)

III. RELIGIOUS INCONSISTENCY.

1. Jesus charged the Pharisees with hypocrisy because they would say, yet not do. (Matt. 23:3-4)
2. We must be consistent in what we say, and in what we do. (Cf. Acts 1:11; Matt. 5:13-16)  In short, we must practice what we preach, and we must preach the truth!

IV. SELF RIGHTEOUSNESS.

  1. Many times Jesus condemned the Pharisees for their haughty, proud, and arrogant attitude. (Cf. Lk. 18:11-12)
    2. We must realize our own imperfections and inabilities and  humble ourselves before God.
3. In humility we must preach the gospel to others.

 V. SINS MEN COULD SEE NO HARM IN.

1. Such as: hatred, lust, divorce, swearing, revenge. (Matt. 5; Gal. 5:19-21)
2. These same sins and "such like" are winked at today, but God abominates every sin. (Rev. 21:8; 22:15)

VI. PARTIAL OBEDIENCE.

  1. Again we look at Jesus' condemnation of the Pharisees of  Matthew 23:14-23.
  2. We readily recognize partial obedience in the denominational world, but what about our own refusals to obey in commands given to children of God?

CONCLUSION:

   1. The sins condemned by the Lord are no less prevalent today. They are just and damning now as then.
   2. Only when we preach what Jesus preached on these matters will the ills of humanity be cured.
   3. On which side of the GREAT DIVIDER do you stand?
   4. Remember, he wants your confession, not just a compliment!
