DON’T QUIT IN A PIT

Psalm 40

 

Introduction

1.    Feeling blue, down, depressed, in the dumps

2.    Egyptian king – Dumpos, died in deep depression

 

David was in a pit – Psalm 30:1

1.    Pit – deep hole in the ground

a.    Often with only a small hole for light, covered = darkness

b.    Joseph’s brothers – Gen. 37

c.    Jeremiah – Jer. 38:17

d.    David – Psalm 40:1

2.    Pit = Confinement, Darkness, Distress, Despair

 

David cried to God for help – Psalm 40:1

1.    By himself – hopeless, no way to save himself

2.    Only God can get him out

3.    Psalm 6:6; 56:8

4.    Matt. 5:4

5.    John 14:13

6.    1 Peter 5:7

 

David WAITED for God to answer – Psalm 40:1

1.    Wait patiently / wait impatiently – but WAIT

2.    Waiting requires humility and hope

3.    We can not know or understand God’s plan

4.    John 13:7

 

God brought David out of the pit – Psalm 40:2

1.    Raise, elevate up and out

2.    Stabilize, on firm ground

3.    Move forward – establish his steps, direction

 

God gave David a new song – Psalm 40:3

1.    New song – new hope, not view on life

 

Others saw and benefited – Psalm 40:3

1.    We recover and others see the change in us

2.    They give God the credit
