Why Does God Allow Suffering?
Introduction –
1. This question is as old as the first tear, and as recent as the latest newscast.
2. It was asked by Job, and is asked by every person who lives.
3. “Why does God allow suffering, pain, disease, disaster?”
4. “How can Christians rejoice in the midst of their trials?” (James 1:2)
5. Here are some Biblical answers.

Suffering keeps this world from
becoming too attractive.
A. Hebrews 13:14
B. 1 Peter 2:11

Suffering can bring out our
best.
A. Romans 5:3-4

Suffering gives an occasion to
silence the enemies of God.
A. 1 Peter 2:15 We must silence
foolish men who ridicule God.
B. Job’s suffering silenced Satan.
C. We must be patiently enduring to silence the critics.

Suffering makes us
appreciative.
A. We often take the comforts of life
for granted.
B. Good health, friends, freedom to worship, loving family.
C. Philippians 1:3-8

Suffering makes us more
dependent upon God.
A. We often think of ourselves as
self-sufficient.
B. Acts 17:28 reminds us we do not even breathe without God’s help.

Suffering helps purify us.
A. 1 Peter 1:6-7 Suffering can be
like purifying gold – in the fire.
B. James 1:2-5 Maturity is developed through trials.

Suffering makes us sympathetic
toward others.

B. Walk a mile in their shoes.

B. In times of suffering – We pray – Earnestly, Perseveringly, Fervently
C. We pray with groanings that can not be uttered. Romans 8:26

A. Can you begin to see some real value to suffering?
B. If you look only from MAN’S viewpoint, you will not understand.
C. Remember – God’s ways are above ours. Isaiah 55:8-9
D. When we look at suffering from GOD’S point of view, from the viewpoint of His plans, then we can begin to appreciate why He would allow suffering.
