Abraham's Altars

Genesis 12:7-8; 13:3-4, 18

Introduction

1. Abraham is known by his tent and his altar

2. Tent = pilgrim, vagabond, traveler

3. Altar = worships God

4. Our worship should identify us.

5. These altars teach the true nature of worship.

Our worship to God is:

1. Internal

   1. Worship begins in the heart

   2. There are things that are external – sing, pray, give

   3. But they must be generated from the inside

   4. Hosea 8:13-14; Amos 5:21-22; Malachi 1:10-14

2. Intentional

   1. Can't accidentally worship God

   2. Worship requires our intent

   3. Genesis 22:4-6

3. Intermittent

   1. All of life is not worship

   2. Worship begins and ends

   3. Genesis 22:5 we will worship and come to you

   4. Acts 8:26-27 went to Jerusalem to worship

4. Independent

   1. Not dependent on the likes or whims of man

   2. Does not matter what others are doing

   3. Abraham was an audience of one

   4. The only one we seek to please is God.
