Spiritual Famine: A Failure to Study

2 Timothy 2:15

Introduction

  1. The KJV - “study” is too narrow

  2. Greek word = make every effort

  3. ASV – Give diligence

  4. NASB and NKJV – Be diligent

  5. NIV – Do your best

  6. Word also means – make haste, be zealous or eager

Spiritual Famine

  1. More Bibles but less reading, study, knowledge, understanding

  2. Hosea 4:6 Destroyed for a lack of knowledge

  3. There is no excuse for not knowing

  4. Ephesians 3:3-4

  5. The Word of God feeds our soul

    1. Matthew 4:4 not by bread alone

    2. Desire the milk of the word

    3. Hebrews – ought to be eating meat

  6. Amos 8:11-12

  7. Israel ignored the will of God – into captivity

  8. Judah failed to learn the lesson – into captivity

  9. 2 Thessalonians 2:10-12

Failure to study makes us vulnerable to false practices and doctrines

  1. Atheism, evolution

  2. Denominationalism, premillennialism

  3. Worldliness

  4. Erroneous thinking – salvation, baptism, worship, music

  5. Vulnerable to the immorality of the world

  6. Psalm 119:11, 104, 133, 97

  7. Results in weak faith – Romans 10:17

We should read, meditate and study the Bible

  1. Save our soul – James 1:21

  2. Builds us up – Acts 20:32

  3. Profitable – 2 Timothy 3:16-17

  4. Sword of Spirit – Ephesians 6:17

  5. Light to guide us – Psalm 119:105

  6. Mirror – James 1:23-25
