Pure Religion

James 1:27

 

  1. Pure

    1. Thayer – 1c) ethically; free from corrupt desire, from sin and guilt; free from every admixture of what is false, sincere genuine; blameless, innocent; unstained with the guilt of anything

    2. 30 times – Pure, clean, clear

    3. John 15:3 – You are clean through the Word I spoke to you

    4. WE MUST BE CLEAN, PURE, WITHOUT ANY CORRUPT THING

  2. Religion

    1. Thayer – 1) religious worship; especially external, that which consists of ceremonies

    2. 4 times – religion, worshiping

    3. Religion is more than the external ceremonies of worship

    4. Colossians 2:18 – worshiping

    5. WE MUST LIVE OUR RELIGION, NOT JUST GO THROUGH THE MOTIONS

  3. Visit

    1. Thayer – 1) to look upon or after, to inspect, examine with the eyes; in order to see how he is, i.e. to visit, go to see one; the poor and afflicted, the sick; to look upon in order to help or to benefit

    2. 11 times – visit, see

    3. From same Greek word as bishop, overseerer

    4. Acts 7:23 – Moses when to visit his brethren

    5. WE MUST VISIT, MORE THAN SOCIALIZE

  4. Fatherless

    1. Thayer - of those bereft of a teacher, guide, guardian

    2. 2 times – fatherless, comfortless

    3. John 14:18 – Jesus to apostles – not leave you comfortless

    4. THERE ARE MORE ORPHANS THAN WE REALIZE

  5. Unspotted

    1. Thayer – 1) spotless; metaphorically; free from censure, irreproachable; free from vice, unsullied

    2. 8 times – without, spot, unspotted

    3. Ephesians 5:25-27 without spot or wrinkle

    4. WE MUST BE UNSPOTTED, FREE FROM STAIN

    1. Thayer – the whole circle of earthly goods, endowments riches, advantages, pleasures, etc, which although hollow and frail and fleeting, stir desire, seduce from God and are obstacles to the cause of Christ

    2. 188 times – world, adorning

    5. There must be a separation from the world.
