Blessed are the Not Offended

Matthew 11:1-6

Introduction

  1. People are easily offended. Say the wrong word – they get angry.

  2. Preach the truth and you will offend many.

  3. Some think we should preach the truth but offend no one.

Background of text

  1. John is in prison and could be killed, he was later.

  2. His disciples took a message to Jesus

  3. Jesus sent a reply back to John.

  4. Why this statement at the end?

How Jesus answered John

  1. Jesus did not mince words

  2. He did not coddle John.

  3. No words of comfort. No promises.

  4. He said what John NEEDED to hear – the truth.

This was a pattern with Jesus

  1. Matthew 8:19-22 – let dead bury their dead

  2. Matthew 19:16-22 – sell what you have and give to the poor

  3. John 3:10 – You are a teacher and you don't know these things?

  4. Mark 7:26-30 – called her a “dog”

  5. John 21:18-22 – This is how you will die. What about John? None of your business.

Old Testament

  1. Elijah and Elisha – 2 Kings 2:1-7 – 3 times told Elisha to go away. Elisha refused.

  2. Naaman 2 Kings 5:1, 9-15 Elisha sent a messenger

  1. Are you offended at class, sermons, elders, brother or sister in church?

  2. Some claim that we should teach the gospel but not offend anyone.

  3. Have you ever been angry at God? Galatians 4:16 (am I your enemy?)

  4. Acts 2 – Peter said “You crucified the Messiah.” Cut to the heart.

  5. Acts 7 – Same sermon. Cut to the heart – killed Stephen.

  6. That is what the Word of God does. Hebrews 4:12

  7. How do we convince people to repent unless they know they have sinned?

  8. How do we teach people to worship God properly unless they know the way they are doing it is wrong?
