GO BACK, STAND STILL, GO FORWARD
Exodus 14:11-16
Introduction
At the Red Sea
People: Go back to Egypt v. 11-12
Moses: Stand still v. 13-14
God: Go forward v. 15-16
Application for us
Each of us has the same options every day
Back up
Remember the “good old days”
We resist change and new things
Who wants to go back?
Stop
We often go before we know the direction
Think before you speak
Railroad crossing – Stop, Look, Listen
In a hole? Stop digging
Go forward
Stop signs don't change – don't park at the stop sign
when you are ready – let' move forward in the right direction
God looks for growth, fruit, increase
Challenges, problems, obstacles
Will come to each of us
What will we decide to do?
This church has the same choices
Back up
Shrink, shrivel up and eventually die
Many congregations are dying of old age.
The Graying of the Church - sermon
Stop
Many churches are on a plateau (level)
Not shrinking, but not growing
Focus becomes internal rather than forward
Keep the aquarium, rather than fishing for men
Go forward
Church is a living body
It is expected to grow –
number, larger classes, more children, more adults
spiritually, love, faith, fellowship
