John the Baptizer

Doctrines to Learn from John

  1. Baptism – For the remission of sins – Mark 1:4; Luke 3:3; Matt. 26:28; Acts 2:38
    Apostles (and others) were baptized under John’s baptism.
    They did not have to be baptized again.

2.     John’s Baptism was temporary
Acts 19:1-5 was AFTER Jesus DBR. After Pentecost.
What was wrong? Baptism = burial; in water; with faith and repentance.
Their faith was facing the wrong direction. They anticipated an event that had already occurred.

3.     Marriage laws supersede Pentecost. Some argue that these laws do not apply to non-Christians.
Matt. 14:4 “It is not lawful for you to have her.”

4.     John’s lifestyle contrasted with Christ’s -
John – Wilderness, Locusts and honey, Camel’s hair and leather, away from society, no miracles
Jesus – Cities, Common food, Common clothes, in society, many miracles
