TITLE: Jesus Wept (or What Are You Going To Do With (city where you live?)

TEXT: Luke 19:41-48

PROPOSITION: God expects us to have some emotions and reactions to the city around us.

QUESTION: What?

INTRODUCTION:

1. Jesus is our example. Let's walk by this example.

2. Here is what Jesus did with Jerusalem:

 

I. Came near - 41

1. Get close to the community - involved

2. Know the people, personality, politics, etc.

II. Saw - 41

1. Open your eyes to what is right and wrong.

2. "Behold" = more than observe, look at (surface)

3. "Behold" = look intently upon or into (internal)

III. Wept - 41

1. All are familiar with John 11:35 "Jesus wept."

2. Text = weeping over the spiritual conditions

IV. Predicted - 42-44

1. Death and destruction for the city

2. Buildings torn down.

3. Cause: Rejection of Christ as the Messiah

V. Drove Out - 45-46

1. This is the 2nd time (see John 2:13-17)

2. What was wrong?

  A. Turned religion into a racket.

  B. Turned "sacred" into "ripoff"

VI. Taught - 47a

1. Daily

2. In the Temple

VII. Was Hated - 47b-48

1. Several groups hated him

  A. Chief priests

  B. Scribes

  C. Pharisees

  D. Saducees

2. Plotted to kill him

3. All that held them back

  A. His popularity among the people

  B. The people were attentive to him.
