Honor the King
1 Peter 2:13-17
In social settings we AVOID religion and politics – strong emotional feelings
Keep in mind the situation of 1st century Christians
Under Roman domination
Limited freedoms
Corrupt government / high taxes / no voice or vote
Peter tells us to:
Submit to those in authority – kings, governors, mayors (13-14)
Submit – place yourself under
They are in charge – like it our not – accept, submit
They have the power to punish or to praise (14)
You can disobey and be punished
You can obey, live in peace – and be praised
First President Bush – 1,000 points of light – people doing something good
In our submission – we silence the foolish men of ignorance (15)
Don't abuse your freedom (16)
As a way to do evil
You are free to serve God
Many claim their RIGHT – “I have the right of way.”
3 commands (17)
Honor all men
Honor = show respect, treat with decency, kindness
All men – Christians or not, different culture, race, language, political view
Love the brotherhood
Love = seek what is best for them
Brotherhood = Christians, fellow believers, those in fellowship
Honor the king
Honor = respect, obey
King = government official (president, governor, mayor, senator, etc.)
