DAVID AND INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

Introduction

1.     I am often asked about David playing musical instruments in worship.

2.     If David could, why not today?

Several Possible Answers

1.     I could dig into Greek and Hebrew words

2.     I could go to all the NT passages that mention “sing”

3.     I could make an argument from the silence of Scripture

One simple answer

1.     The answers is NO

2.     We do not live under the Law of Moses

3.     Example

a.     In Russia – all foreigners and natives must have a passport to check into a hotel, do business at a bank, pay bills, and many other things.

b.     We do not carry our passport here in the US. Why? Not under that law.

4.     David lived under the law of Moses

a.     Observed the new moon – Psalm 81:3

b.     Burned incense, offered an evening sacrifice – Psalm 141:2

c.     Offered burnt offerings – Psalm 20:3

d.     Observed solemn feasts – Psalm 81:3

e.     Went to the temple – Psalm 11:4

5.     That law has ended

a.     Ephesians 2:14-15

b.     Colossians 2:14-15

c.     Hebrews 8:6-7

d.     Hebrews 8:13

6.     We do not use instruments of music in worship

a.     Same reason we don’t have animal sacrifices, new moon, burn incense

b.     Same reason we don’t observe feast days, days of fasting, temple worship

c.     We do not observe Passover, Day of Atonement, Pentecost

7.     We are under the law of Christ – not the law of Moses

a.     Both David and Christians will be judged by the law under which they lived
