TITLE: Oxymornons

TEXT: John 19:38-41

PROPOSITION: We must understand the many oxymorons in our lives.

The word – Oxymoron – Oxos – sharp; Moro – dull, foolish

Some you may have heard before – Jumbo shrimp; Working vacation; Almost perfect; Freezer burn; Old news; Expanded briefing; Military intelligence

Here are some in the Bible (and in the church today).

 

1. Secret disciple.       John 19:38-41

A.    Disciples are not ashamed – ROM. 1:16

B.    Disciples share their faith.

C.    Are you trying to be a “secret disciple” of Jesus?

2. Not so, lord.            Acts 10:11-14

A.    Peter was sure that he was doing the Lord’s will.

B.    He refused to obey the command.

C.    Are you saying, “Not so, Lord” ?

3. Selfish giving.         Acts 5:1-11

A.    Giving should be done willingly 2 Cor. 8:12

B.    Cheerfully – 2 Cor. 9:7

C.    Our giving should not be from a selfish motive.

D.    Are you a selfish giver?

4. Cruel kindness.

A.    Parents treat children this way when:

B.    Give them all they want, ask for,

C.    Make sacrifices for them

D.    Children do not learn appreciation, responsibility

E.     FAILURE TO DISCIPLINE IS CRUEL KINDNESS.

5. Separated togetherness.

A.    We have created a generation gap.

B.    Sometimes good to mix ages, wisdom, zeal.

C.    Families – often going in all directions.

6. Holy sweat.

A.    Holy – sacred, set apart, sanctified, special

B.    Sweat – What it takes to get there. Hard work, effort, energy

C.    Holy <> Perfect; Sweat <> salvation.

D.    Holy = set apart; Sweat = dedication

E.     Is your sweat holy?

7. Lukewarm Christian

            A. How can one be true Christian and be lukewarm?
