GOD, OUR CREATOR

GENESIS 1:1- 2:3

Hebrew word – Elohim (El, Elohay and other forms of the word)

Introduction:

1.    Our VBS looks at some of the terms used to describe God.

2.     This lesson – Our Creator seen in Genesis 1 & 2

3.     Elohim = El – power; Him = plural (showing the trinity) “Let US make man in OUR image”

POWER

1.     How did God create this world? “And God SAID - - - and it was so.”

2.     See Psalm 33:6-7, 9

3.     See 2 Peter 3:5-7

4.     In our text – said, called, blessed – occur 17 times

5.     HOW DOES THIS HELP US?

a.     Awe in the miracles of the past

                                                    i.     List some of these miracles – showing the power of God

                                                  ii.     Why did God do these miracles?

                                                 iii.     God is ALL POWERFUL

b.     Peace in the situation of the present

                                                    i.     Prayer and providence are comforting to Christians

                                                  ii.     God is not a distant onlooker, He is involved in our world

                                                 iii.     Deists = God master clock winder, observes, but not involved

c.      Joy in the outlook of tomorrow

                                                    i.     We can endure today, if there is hope in tomorrow

                                                  ii.     “I will come again” John 14

6.     God is STILL the Almighty God, still omnipotent, still as powerful as ever

a.     Batteries run down, throw away or recharge

b.     God does not run down, does not need to be recharged

OTHER ISSUES TO STUDY AND DISCUSS

1.     Creation “Day” vs. long period of time, era, age, epic

a.     Some argue that each “day” was millions of years long

b.     Is there any evidence that these days were 24 hour days?

c.      Skeleton at a museum – 1 million, 500 thousand and 3 years old – I have been a guide here for 3 years and it was 1,500,000 when I started to work.

2.     Theistic Evolution = God is the WHO, Evolution is the HOW

a.     See Psalm 33 and 2 Peter 3 –above

b.     The Bible tells us both the WHO (God) and the HOW (Spoke it)

3.     Term God = God the Father or the entire trinity, Jesus is God, Holy Spirit is God

a.     We often read God and think it is God the Father

                                                    i.     Jesus IS GOD = John 1:1-4

                                                  ii.     Holy Spirit IS GOD = Acts 5:3-4

                                                 iii.     God = all powerful, deity, the godhead, trinity

b.     Was Jesus involved in creation? Colossians 1:16-17; John 1:1-4

c.      Was the Holy Spirit involved in creation? Genesis 1:2

4.     God still works today

a.     Deists – master clock winder, then watches to see what happens

b.     Providence

c.      Miracles

d.     Does God still answer our prayers?
