CENI (Command, Example, Necessary Inference)

C Jesus used COMMAND to determine doctrine (Mark 12:28-30):

1.     Think about the 10 Commandments

2.     God is Sovereign – Supreme, In Charge

3.     Hebrews 5:8-9 Jesus learned to obey

4.     We must obey

5.     Commands are found all through the Bible. Obey them.

E Jesus used EXAMPLE to determine doctrine (Matthew 12:1-4):

1.     Caution here

a.     Some are examples of WRONG

b.     Some are examples of A WAY to do something but not required

                                                    i.     Communion – at night, in 2nd floor

ii.     Matthew 26:30 sang a hymn and went out

c.     Some are examples of THE WAY to obey God.

2.     Here is the principle about Examples – An example is binding when it illustrates a requirement.

a.     Communion is required

b.     Coming together is required (1 Corinthians 11)

c.     1st Day of the week assembly is required (1 Corinthians 16:1-2)

d.     Acts 20:7 – is an example of the above requirements

NI Jesus used NECESSARY INFERENCE to determine doctrine

1.     This is the most difficult area to understand and apply.

2.     There are many areas where we “infer” some things.

a.     See a member come out of a place that sells alcohol

b.     See an atheist come out of a church building

3.     Inference is not authority – Where there is more than one inference – it is not a necessary inference.

4.     NECESSARY INFERENCE = only one explanation for the fact stated

a.     I saw a Jack come OUT of the building

b.     Inference – Jack went INTO the building

5.     Mark 7 – Honor father and mother

a.     Often applied to children growing up at home

b.     Jesus applies it to adult children with aging parents

c.     Necessary Inference = Honor father and mother does not expire when you turn 18.

6.     Matthew 22:31-32

a.     2,000 years after the death of Abraham

b.     God is the God of Abraham

c.     God is the God of the living.

d.     NI = Abraham is alive
