TITLE: Wrath of God

TEXT: Romans 1:18-20
PROPOSITION: God has emotions – including wrath.
QUESTION: Why?

INTRODUCTION:

  1. We often talk about the love, kindness, compassion, tenderness, and mercy of God.

  2. However, the Bible also points out the “other side” of God – Justice, Anger, Wrath

  3. Does God have emotions?

    1. Grief – Genesis 6:6

    2. Love – John 17:26; John 3:16

    3. Hate – Malachi 2:16; Zechariah 8:17; Proverbs 6:16-19

    4. Joy – Nehemiah 8:10

    5. Wrath – Exodus 4:14; Numbers 25:4

Define

  1. Dictionary – "1. Forceful, often vindictive anger. 2. a. Punishment or vengeance as a manifestation of anger. b. Divine retribution for sin."

  2. Bible -

    1. Wrath – 194 time in KJV

    2. Anger – 228 times in KJV

    3. These attitudes are condemned in the Bible.

    4. However, in many of these instances it is God who is angry.

  3. Why would God be angry or wrathful?

What kindles God's wrath?

  1. Genesis 6:5-6

    1. Wickedness, only evil continually

    2. Man's sins caused the flood

  2. Revelation 19:15

    1. Sharp sword – smite nations

    2. Rule with a rod of iron, wine press of fierceness

God is HOLY

  1. God is Holy, pure, without sin

  2. He can not allow any impurity to defile Him

  3. 1 Peter 1:15-16 – Sin is unholy, unrighteous, corrupt, offensive

  4. Psalm 106:40

  5. Exodus 20:3-5

Wicked Cannot Go Unpunished

  1. 2 Thessalonians 1:6-9

  2. Romans 6:23 – wages of sin – death

Conclusion:

  1. Romans 11:22 – Goodness AND Severity of God

  2. Hebrews 10:31 – Fearful thing to fall into hands of the living God
