TITLE: Five R's of Repentance

TEXT: 2 Corinthians 7:10

PROPOSITION: There are five steps involved in repentance.

QUESTION: How?

KEY WORD: Steps

Introduction:

  1. Repentance is commanded

  2. Acts 17:30; Luke 13:3; Acts 2:38

  3. But what does this include?

  4. What is involved in repentance?

Recognition of Sin

  1. Perhaps the hardest part – admit that we have sinned

  2. As long as we fail to see our sin – we will not repent

  3. We must be aware of sin – eternity – heaven and hell

Remorse – Grieving over our sins

  1. There must be sorrow, regret

  2. Godly sorrow leads to repentance – 2 Corinthians 7:10

Resolve to make a change

  1. Repent – from Greek word meaning – to change one's mind

  2. Determine a new course of action, a change of direction

  3. Repentance begins with – a decision, a choice

Reformation – Doing things different from the past

  1. One can not repent and keep living the same lifestyle

  2. John 12:42-43 – Many believed – but did not change

  3. Isaiah 55:7 – Let the wicked forsake his ways

  4. Matthew 3:8 – Bring forth fruits worthy of repentance

Restitution where possible

  1. To fully repent we must restore as much as we can

  2. Some sins – not possible to “undo” them

  3. Where we can – we must restore, replace

A Biblical Example – Luke 15 – Prodigal Son

  1. Recognition – He came to himself (17)

  2. Remorse – I have sinned against heaven (18)

  3. Resolve – I will arise and go to my father (18)

  4. Reformation – He arose and went (18)

  5. Restitution – I am not worthy to be a son (21) [restore relationship]
