TITLE: Lot's Wife

TEXT: Luke 17:26-32

PROPOSITION:

QUESTION: What?

KEY WORD: Lessons

Introduction:

  1. My uncle (a preacher) hung a sign under the clock on the back wall of the church auditorium - “Remember Lot's Wife”

  2. God's judgments of the past should remind us – warn us

  3. The story is in Genesis 19:12-26.

    1. Southwest end of Dead Sea – sulfur and asphalt pits

    2. Nothing grows – no plants, no animals – birds do not fly over

  4. Here are some lessons to learn from Lot's wife.

She Perished though the wife of a righteous man

  1. Lot made his share of mistakes in judgment

  2. But he is called “righteous” - 2 Peter 2:7-8

  3. Not righteous of ourselves – but God declares us righteous

  4. Righteous are scarcely saved -1 Peter 4:17-18

She Perished though Warned of the Danger

  1. Genesis 19:17 – Escape for your life

  2. We, too, have warnings – Do we heed or ignore?

  3. When a storm is coming – we can seek shelter OR break the baromoter.

She Perished though She Made an Effort to be Saved

  1. She ALMOST escaped – She almost lived, He almost won the game

  2. Felix was almost persuaded

  3. She was lost because her heart was still in Sodom

  4. “Close only counts in hand grenades and horseshoes.”

She Perished though she Committed Only One Sin

  1. We categorize sin – by size, harm done

  2. Repent of the BIG ones – every day sins – on automatic forgiveness?

  3. Sin is Sin is Sin

  4. One sin (big or small) is just a dangerous at the Judgment

  5. Others learned this lesson

    1. Moses – struck a rock – not enter the promised land

    2. Achan – took a garment – whole family died

She Perished because she Needed More Faith

  1. Faith includes – OBEY

  2. What kind of faith, knows and understands, but does not obey?

  3. James 2 – DEAD faith

She Perished because she Looked Back

  1. She did not GO back – just looked

  2. This showed where her heart, interest, desire was.

  3. Luke 9:62 – Hand to the plow – looking back – not fit for the kingdom

  4. Hebrews 12:2 – Looking unto Jesus – nowhere else

  5. Hebrews 10:39 – We are not of those who draw back to perdition
