TITLE: Enoch Walked with God

TEXT: Genesis 5:21-24 - 21Enoch lived sixty-five years, and begot Methuselah. 22After he begot Methuselah, Enoch walked with God three hundred years, and had sons and daughters. 23So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years. 24And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.

PROPOSITION: Enoch can teach us by his important example.

QUESTION: How?

KEY WORD: Examples

Introduction:

  1. Today is Father's Day – Have you noticed? On Mother's Day – nice sermons about love, caring, compassion? Father's Day – Do better, be more involved, club them over the head!

  2. Not doing that today.

  3. Enoch can show us, by example, the kind of man God wants.

HE WALKED WITH GOD

  1. Our text mentions twice that he walked with God.

  2. Walk” is more than just taking steps -

  3. WALK refers to the lifestyle, manner of living, mode of conduct

  4. This was not just any walk

    1. There is a walk in sin, unrighteousness

    2. Enoch's walk was WITH God – upright, righteous

    3. His conduct was righteous.

  5. Harmony and Peace between Enoch and God

    1. Amos 3:3 – Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?

    2. Rhetorical question – Obvious answer – NO

    3. Agreement with God is not by compromise

    4. We must walk the path God chooses – not our own way

    5. Philippians 3:16-17

  6. We are never too old to start serving God

    1. Enoch was 65 when he began his walk with God

    2. It took his some time to get headed in the right direction

  7. His walk lasted 300 years!

    1. It is sad to see some today who do not remain faithful for a week, month, or a year.

ENOCH PLEASED GOD

  1. Hebrews 11:5-6 - 2nd mention of Enoch

  2. 5By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, “and was not found, because God had taken him”; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God. 6But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

  3. He is included in the “Hall of Faith” list

  4. To please God – FAITH is a MUST.

  5. Think about the options:

    1. Enoch could had pleased himself

    2. He could have sought to please others (wife, family, friends)

    3. He could have tried to please men

  6. WWJD? Is not just a catchy slogan.

    1. In everything – we should ask what would please God?

    2. Family, social, work, school, entertainment, church

    3. What would be pleasing to God?

HE DID NOT SEE DEATH

  1. Genesis 5:24 – He was not, for God took him

  2. Of the billions who have lived on earth – only 2 have not died

    1. Enoch – and Elijah (taken in chariot)

    2. God rewarded these men for their faithful service

  3. God still rewards those who seek to follow Him

    1. John 11:25 – I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he die, he shall live.

    2. 1 Timothy 1:10 teaches that Christ has “brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.”

Conclusion

  1. Enoch is an example for all men (and women) today

    1. He walked with God

    2. He pleased God

    3. He did not die

  2. You may die physically, but, as Jesus said, YOU WILL LIVE.
