TITLE: Treat God’s Name Carelessly

INTRODUCTION:

  1. The 3rd command – Don’t misuse God’s name

  2. We must show respect and reverence for His name.

  3. This command involves more than many think.


 

The Name of the Lord

  1. There are many names, titles, terms which apply to God.

    1. Jehovah-Rhoi – Shepherd – Psalm 23:1

    2. Jehovah Shammah – God who is there – Ezekiel 48:35

    3. Jehovah Jireh – God will provide – Genesis 22:14

  2. There are so many terms (almost 400)

    1. Study one each day

    2. Take more than a year

 

Misuse of His Name

  1. Bad Language

    1. There are at least 7 ways to use bad language

    2. Filthy, gutter, swearing, profanity, cursing, sacrilegious, euphemism

    3. Take what is sacred, holy and drag it down to material world

    4. Many “Christians” violate this command

      1. Oh, my God.” – surprised

      2. God, you scared me,” When frightened.

      3. My Lord, did you hear him swear?”

  2. Fail to Keep Promises

    1. Deuteronomy 23:21-23

    2. Ecclesiastes 5:4-5

  3. Hypocrisy

    1. Worship God on Sunday

    2. Deny Him in our lives all week

    3. 1 John 4:20

    4. John 14:15

    5. Alexander the Great was brought a deserter – Learned his name was Alexander. He said – Change your ways OR change your name.

Proper Use of God’s Name

  1. Profession – Romans 10:9

  2. Prayer & Praise

  3. Taking Legal Oaths

 

Penalty

  1. Not be guiltless

  2. With guilt comes punishment

  3. Purpose of discipline is to bring repentance

  4. Repentance will restore fellowship
