TITLE: The Bible is From God – Science (4 of 4)

Introduction:

  1. The Bible is NOT a science text book.

  2. But there are statements made in the Bible – that state facts of science thousands of years before they were “discovered.”

Value of Snow

  1. Job 38:22

  2. Snow contains Nitrogen

  3. Value to gardens, farmers, grazing land, forest land

  4. Snow is also an insulator to keep the ground warmer and ready to receive the water from melting snow

Empty north

  1. Job 26:7

  2. Galileo in 1609 invented the telescope and began to study the sky

  3. That day was “geocentric” (belief that all the solar system revolved around the earth – earth centered)

  4. Galilieo suggested that:

    1. The north sky did not contain many stars

    2. The earth was NOT the center of solar system

    3. The earth traveled around the sun – heliocentric

    4. Heliocentric – We make an annual orbit around the sun

  5. 1633 an inquisition was held and forced him to back away from his “theory” the earth revolved around the sun.

  6. For his “heresy” he was excommunicated and his writings were banned

Gravity

  1. Job 26:7

  2. There have been many theories how the earth was held in place

  3. Atlas – was holding the earth on his shoulder

  4. Isaac Newton – remember the falling apple? Why did it fall down?

  5. His study led to the concept of gravity – all around the world

  6. God knew that long before Newton came along

Ocean currents

  1. Psalm 8:8

  2. Oceanographer sick – relative read Bible to him

  3. This passage – paths in the sea – That is is!

  4. He charted ocean currents

Sun orbit

  1. Psalm 19:5-6

  2. We know know that the sun has its orbit

Speed (travel) of light

  1. Job 38:19

  2. Light has a “way” - path, it travels

  3. We now measure space in “light years” the distance light travels in a year

Water evaporation cycle

  1. Ecclesiastes 1:6-7 The wind blows to the south and turns to the north; round and round it goes, ever returning on its course. All streams flow into the sea, yet the sea is never full. To the place the streams come from, there they return again.

  2. "He draws up the drops of water, which distill as rain to the streams; the clouds pour down their moisture and abundant showers fall on mankind." - Job 36:27-28

  3. "He wraps up the waters in his clouds, yet the clouds do not burst under their weight." - Job 26:8

Ark – boat ratio

  1. Ark was 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, 45 feet deep

  2. 30: 5: 3 ratio – many thought “all wrong”

  3. 1844 – Isambard Brunell built the Great Britain – same size

  4. The SS Jeremiah O'Brien – same ration

  5. Cargo ship – not for speed but for stablility with heavy cargo

Bury human waste

  1. Deuteronomy 23:12-14

  2. Europe – 13 million died in the “Black Plague”

  3. Cause – open human waste – not buried or treated

  4. God knew this all along

Life is in the blood

  1. Leviticus 17:11-14

  2. George Washington – bled to death

  3. Many doctors used leeches to suck out the poison

  4. Bleeding was done to “get rid of poison in system”

Countless Stars

  1. "I will make the descendants of David my servant and the Levites who minister before me as countless as the stars of the sky and as measureless as the sand on the seashore.'" - Jeremiah 33:22 (NIV)

  2. The angel of the Lord called to Abraham: "I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies," - Genesis 22:17 (NIV)

  3. Jacob in a prayer to God: "But you have said, 'I will surely make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted.'" - Genesis 32:12 (NIV)

  4. The word of the Lord came to Abram: He took him outside and said, "Look up at the heavens and count the stars—if indeed you can count them." Then he said to him, "So shall your offspring be." - Genesis 15:5 (NIV)

Expansive Outer Space

  1. He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in. - Isaiah 40:22 (NIV)

  2. He wraps himself in light as with a garment; he stretches out the heavens like a tent and lays the beams of his upper chambers on their waters. He makes the clouds his chariot and rides on the wings of the wind. - Psalms 104:2-3 (NIV)

  3. This is what God the Lord says — he who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and all that comes out of it, who gives breath to its people, and life to those who walk on it. - Isaiah 42:5 (NIV)

  4. The Lord speaking: "It is I who made the earth and created mankind upon it. My own hands stretched out the heavens; I marshaled their starry hosts." - Isaiah 45:12 (NIV)

THE BIBLE IS FROM GOD

  1. There can be no other explanation for the knowledge contained in the Bible.

  2. The challenge for us – Believe – and OBEY.
