FORMULA FOR BAPTISM?

What should we say before a baptism?

1. Is anything required?

   1. Matthew 18:19 – tells what to DO not what to SAY

   2. Acts 2:38 – epi = upon the name Jesus Christ

   3. Acts 10:48 – en = by the the name of the Lord

   4. Acts 8:16; 19:5 – eis = into the name Lord Jesus

2. If a formula is taught:

   1. Which one is correct?

   2. Is a baptism valid without the exact words?

   3. This makes the formula a charm with power

3. Principles involved

   1. Making a law that God did not make

   2. Must say – 3 names AND for remission of sins

   3. “In the name” does not mean “say the name”

   4. Creates a creed

   5. What about doing ALL in the name of the Lord?

4. Required vs. Options

   1. Required – burial in water, purpose – for remission of sins

   2. Options -

      1. Where – river, creek, baptistry

      2. How – face forward, backwards

      3. Wear – White robe, blue jeans

      4. Said – no specific forumla

      5. When – at worship, midnight, noon

      6. Who performs – preacher, parent, elder, teacher
