TITLE: Torn Shirts and Broken bottles
TEXT
: Mark 2:18-22
PROPOSITION: The religion of Jesus is brand new.
QUESTION: What?
KEY WORD: Absurdities
READING: Same
INTRODUCTION:

Background - John's disciples fasted often.

Disciples of Jesus did not fast often.

A. Why not fast more often?

B. How did they know the frequency?

Jesus gave three absurdities to illustrate his point:

1. Don't mourn at a wedding feast.

1. Weddings should be happy events.

2. This is not a time to mourn.

3. Wedding are "feast" time not "fast" time.

2. Don't ruin a new garment to fix an old one.

1. Your old shirt gets torn (or worn) at the elbow.

2. Go out - buy a new shirt - rip off sleeve.

3. Put new sleeve on old shirt.

3. Don't put new wine in old skins.

1. "Bottles" = goat skins.

2. When new - elastic, stretch, expand.

3. Old = brittle, dregs inside, will ferment

4. Gas pressure will burst the skin - juice will be lost.

NOTE: Skin was NOT so juice can ferment.

Skin was sealed to PREVENT fermentation.

Conclusion:

1. Jesus did not come to patch up the old, worn out, religion of Judiasm.
He did not come to preserve this old system with a new patch.

2. Jesus is teaching a new religion.
Not an old one patched, fixed, repaired and re-conditioned.
The religion of Jesus Christ is BRAND NEW!!
