TITLE: Because We Were Baptized

TEXT: Romans 6:3-6

PROPOSITION: Baptism has more impact than just forgiveness of past sins.

QUESTION: How?

INTRODUCTION:

  1. The Bible teaches – Faith, Repentance, and Baptism
  2. It also teaches that these are required for salvation, remission of sins.
  3. But baptism causes us to do and be more than just saved.
  4. BECAUSE WE HAVE BEEN BAPTIZED –

We Walk in Newness of Life – Romans 6:3-6

  1. Baptism is a new birth, a new beginning, a new life.
  2. Baptized? Then you are to walk in a new way of life.
  3. We (preachers) have for too long preached the need for baptism –
    Without preaching the changes which it requires in our lives.

We are United in Christ – Galatians 3:26-28

  1. Children by faith in Jesus (26)
  2. Baptized into Christ (27)
  3. We are all one in Christ (28)

We Worship God – Acts 2:42

  1. 3,000 were baptized (Acts 2:41)
  2. It is natural that they would "continue in the teaching"
    Fellowship – Breaking of bread – Prayer
  3. Worship can only come from a Christian. Matthew 7:21
  4. A baptized person WILL not abandon worshipping his God.

We Study the Bible – Matthew 28:19-20

  1. We do not "know it all" at the time of our baptism.
  2. There is much to be learned, growing to do. (2 Peter 3:16)
  3. As newborn babes – we desire to grow. (2 Peter 2:2)
  4. Why are there so many in the church – ignorant, babies, weaklings?
    Hebrews 5:12-14 – Still drinking milk – not ready for meat.
  5. How much time do you spend in study each day? Week?

We Seek Things Above – Colossians 3:1-5

  1. We have a new focus – not on earth – not material things.
  2. Our view is long range, eternal, spiritual.

Baptism saves (1 Peter 3:21), but it also changes our behavior and us.

Baptism changes who I am. It changes what I do. It changes our life.
